The Southwest Virginia Education and Training Network (SVETN) is a consortium of 16 school divisions and 9 colleges and universities organized for the purpose of conducting video-based distance teaching. SVETN constructs, manages, and evaluates the use of special purpose interactive classrooms that are linked by fiber optic cable. The classrooms are in high schools and colleges.

The SVETN is a 501 (c) (3) not-for-profit corporation governed by educators. Headquartered in Abingdon at the Southwest Virginia Higher Education Center, the corporation serves the educational needs of the residents of Bland, Buchanan, Carroll, Dickenson, Grayson, Lee, Russell, Scott, Smyth, Tazewell, Washington, Wise, and Wythe Counties, all in Virginia. Organized in 1993, SVETN has grown from a network of three sites more than fifty sites with more locations under development.

The Southwest Virginia Education and Training Network (SVETN) operates interactive learning centers at host institutions within a thirteen-county region. New sites are added regularly. While they exist primarily to serve the academic programs of the member colleges and schools, these Community Learning Centers can be scheduled to meet the communication and training requirements of non-members including state and local governments, civic groups, social service agencies, professional societies, businesses, and industries.

Each location is equipped with a standard array of cameras, microphones, VCR, and TV monitors; any site can transmit as well as receive. An instructor who learns to operate equipment at one site can do it with confidence at another.

Programming for members, usually academic courses, is scheduled by the originating school division or college. Non-members should contact the Executive Director to arrange for the use of facilities, SVETN charges non-members the following fees to offset the cost of network operations.
