Description
This course will provide students with an overview of the current and historical theories explaining the causation of criminal and other deviant behavior. Critical evaluation and discussion of statistics on crime, crime victims, and categories of criminal offenses will be explored. The treatment and punishment of these criminal offenses will also be examined as well as the impact of police, judicial, and the correctional system on this treatment or punishment.  
 
Students will be asked to communicate on a regular basis, sharing thoughts and ideas about current events, readings, and other criminal justice beliefs. They will also be responsible for reading, work from the book, and quizzes as well as research and essay type assignments.

Gina Hamm
Gina Hamm, NBCT - Mrs. Hamm graduated from Virginia Intermont College with a BS in Business Administration with 6-12 Certification as well as a minor in Accounting and Economics. She obtained a MS from Radford University in Criminal Justice. She received national status as a National Board Certified Teacher in Career and Technical Education in 2008.  
 
This is Mrs. Hamm’s twelfth year teaching; schools include Tazewell High School, Northwood High School, and currently E.B. Stanley Middle School. Mrs. Hamm teaches Business and Information Technology. She has also taught for Elite Learning, Governor’s School, and Upward Bound; classes include Survey of Criminal Justice, Forensic Science, and Computer Programming.
