| Description |
Patrick D. Reagan in his book, History and the Internet, argues that unlike television where “all the intelligence is at the point of transmission and little at the point of reception,” the Internet can turn consumers of information into producers of knowledge. In this interactive, online course it is impossible to become a television couch potato. Students become practitioners of the historical method constructing interpretations based on primary and secondary sources researched and found under the direction of scholars who edit Web sites and guided by the classroom experience of the online instructor.
As a result, this course becomes a truly interactive learning experience bringing together students and teacher as researchers, writers, and historians learning how to use the historical method in a multimedia environment. HIS 121-122 also serves as an important option in Virginia’s Senior Year Plus program. Successful completion of this sequence will earn six hours or a year’s worth of college credit in United States history. As the governor’s office points out such dual enrollment programs allow high school seniors who have completed most of their graduation requirements to enroll in this community college course for both high school and college credit. Dual enrollment saves parents and students part of college tuition and allows students to enter college with a more realistic perception of what is expected of them.
